Askey Powers Shoushan Zoo 2.0 Upgrade with 5G and AI for a Smarter Visitor Experience

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan, May 28, 2025 - Askey hosted a press conference at Shoushan Zoo to present the results of its cutting-edge initiative, “5G Private Network New Horizons – AI Zoo Experience.” Since 2023, Askey has partnered with the Kaohsiung City Government to drive the Shoushan Zoo Smartization Project, aiming to transform the park into Taiwan’s first smart interactive zoo powered by 5G private network technology.

This ambitious 2.0 upgrade leverages a combination of 5-watt small cells, a proprietary Autonomous Management Platform (AMP), and 5G CPE devices to create a high-speed, low-latency, and highly stable network environment. The project has also received significant support from the Industrial Development Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs, enabling seamless integration of emerging technologies.

Driving Smart Transformation with 5G Private Network and AI
Robert Lin, Chairman of Askey, remarked that Askey is committed to vertical integration of 5G private network solutions, offering tailored end-to-end applications for enterprises. In this project, we successfully deployed a 5G outdoor private network alongside AI, AR, machine learning, and ChatGPT technologies to create next-gen interactive zoo experiences. Our goal is to scale these solutions for large venues and international markets.

Kaohsiung Deputy Mayor Chinrong Lin highlighted that the partnership introduces AI-driven interactive facilities, AR, image recognition, and 4K aerial photography, shifting the zoo experience from passive observation to immersive, hands-on learning. Visitors engage more deeply with animal conservation and ecological education through mobile-based smart applications.

Tourism Bureau Director Minlin Gao emphasized how the integration of smart technology and AI has enabled Shoushan Zoo to better promote awareness of Taiwan’s native wildlife while offering engaging and inclusive experiences for visitors of all ages.

This project has received support from partners including Chunghwa Telecom, 13 TechArt, Spatial Topology Co., Ltd., Greenfield International Smart Business Co., Ltd., Chenghong International Co., Ltd., and the Metal Industries Research and Development Center, etc. With the technical expertise and resources provided by these partners, the project has progressed smoothly and achieved numerous innovative applications.

Digital Interactive Games and Smart Experiences
To enhance visitor interaction and educational experiences, Askey collaborates with and the team partners to jointly launch four digital interactive games:
1. Ecological Code – Conservation Defense Battle
Utilizing outdoor 5G private networks with UWB positioning to deliver an immersive real-world puzzle-solving experience, it offers insights into the lives of the indigenous people of Shoushan and issues related to ecological coexistence.

2. Grass Owl Guardian
Developed in collaboration with the Kaohsiung City Wild Bird Society, this game features AI interaction and ChatGPT responses to educate teens about the endangered grass owl.

3. Conservation Walker
Uses AR and image recognition to introduce lesser-known species and showcase the work of conservationists.

4. 4K Motion Tracking
Utilizes 4K drone footage and AI gesture recognition to provide dynamic multi-angle views of animal habitats, complete with accessible modes designed for individuals with disabilities.
